Career Profile - Alastair Morrison

Job Title: Technical Director

Qualifications: BA (Hons) Commerce

Career History

I joined Absoft straight from Napier University as a Trainee SAP Analyst/Programmer. After several weeks of intensive SAP ABAP training in London I was immediately put to work developing a new time writing system as part of a larger project for a global oil and gas operator based in Aberdeen. I then spent the next three years continuing to development my SAP analytical and programming skills working for a number of different clients both on-site and remotely.

Around this time I started to take an interest in Absoft’s own IT infrastructure and SAP Technical Administration. I slowly moved away from programming into a Technical Consulting role, installing and managing SAP systems. I successfully worked to implement a modern IT infrastructure within Absoft as the company grew.

In 2000, after 5 years, I was invited to join the Absoft Board of Management in the new position of Technical Director. I now combine this role with a full time position as Principal SAP Technical Consultant.

What does your job involve?

My job is extremely varied due to the two roles that I fulfill.  As Technical Director I am responsible for setting IT strategy and advising the board on changes required to Absoft’s internal IT infrastructure.  As a Principal SAP Technical Consultant I manage and work with a team of highly skilled individuals to implement, support and manage systems for Absoft’s global customer base.

Best bits

I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to work in various parts of the world implementing SAP, including Europe and Thailand.  Each day is different and presents a new set of challenges.  As it is a highly technical role there are always new areas to work on and problems to solve.

Worst bits

Being a Director and Manager can be stressful at times as you are responsible for a great number of people. However, the sense of reward and achievement that Absoft's successes bring, more than makes up for this.

Advice to others

IT is critical to businesses today and individuals with sound IT skills and a thirst for knowledge are sought after by employers. A career in the industry is varied and interesting.
