Career Profile - Teresa HAINEY Job title: SAP HR Consultant
Qualifications: BA (Hons) Business Studies
Career History
I spent the 3rd year of my degree, from The Robert Gordon University, on a placement with Absoft in the HR and Payroll team. I had absolutely no knowledge of SAP prior to my placement but I thoroughly enjoyed my year. I was given the opportunity to return after graduation. I have now been with Absoft for a year and a half and continue to enjoy consultancy.
What does your job involve?
During my placement year I grasped a great understanding of SAP HR and spent the majority of time in the Support Centre, within Absoft’s offices. Working in Support was a great way to learn, with various problems and clients receiving daily assistance. I have continued to work with the support team and as my knowledge and experience has increased I am now more involved in clients’ projects, often at client sites across Aberdeen and the UK. Every day is different working as a SAP HR Consultant.
Best Bits
Hands-on experience of SAP; for example I have experience with several HR and Payroll modules. I have on several occasions attended SAP specific courses in London and Dublin and have travelled to work on client sites across Scotland and England. There may be opportunity to travel overseas in the future, as I have seen other Absoft Consultants do. Working off-site is not only a great personal and learning experience; it is nice to have a job where you have the opportunity to leave the office now and again!
Worse Bits
As with any other job, you only get out what you put in. Working with SAP in both a support or project environment means you are constantly faced with new problems. It is a constant learning process so it can be difficult at times but it is very rewarding when you master it! It can be stressful when trying to meet deadlines required by our clients.
Advice to others
I had no knowledge in SAP or IT, don’t let that stop you! My degree is in business studies and SAP was not an area I had discovered until my placement at Absoft. SAP Consultancy is a diverse and rewarding career and if you find an area of SAP that you are really interested in, you can choose to specialise in that field.
