Staff from Aberdeen firm Absoft are in training for a sponsored running challenge to raise cash supporting the opening of a new Maggie’s cancer caring centre in the city.
A team of five from the SAP software consultancy is taking part in the Baker Hughes 10K, in May, to raise funds for the £3million campaign to create a Maggie’s Centre in the grounds of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
The project is a collaboration between Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres and the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation – the charity set up by Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie in memory of his mother, who died from lung cancer in 1991.
Maggie’s Aberdeen will transform cancer care for patients and families across the north-east of Scotland, supporting up to 40% of all new people diagnosed with the illness each year, within five years of the centre’s opening.
Lesley Esson, of Tarves Aberdeenshire, project manager at Absoft, who is a member of the team, says: “Aberdeen is the only one of Scotland’s major cities that doesn’t have a Maggie’s centre so we felt it was important to contribute to the appeal, helping to make this important project happen.
“By taking part in the race we will raise vital funds for a charity which does tremendous work supporting cancer sufferers, and their families.”
The team hopes to contribute more than £2,500 to the campaign and anyone wishing to sponsor them can do so by visiting http://www.justgiving.com/AbsoftTeam.
